Molecular methods reveal new information on the range and recent history of four related and similar appearing species: Hydrilla verticillata, Egeria densa, Elodea canadensis, and Elodea nuttallii (family Hydrocharitaceae). We also distinguish monoecious from dioecious hydrilla for each of the hydrilla samples. We examined implications of the confirmed distribution relative to previous records and demonstrated the regional and national need for reverification of these species collected recently or as much as a half century ago. | Study Area Description | Fresh and archived samples were acquired throughout the USA: about % 30 of the samples were from the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Herbarium samples were acquired with permission from the United States National Herbarium (US), George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia (GMUF), North Carolina State University (NCSC), University of Florida (FLAS), University of Alabama (UNA), Missouri Botanical Garden (MO), Patuxent Research Refuge Herbarium, and Gabrielson Laboratory, Laurel, MD (PRR). |
